IMTPA tracks Illinois bills that affect the massage therapy profession. Below are the bills currently under review, with plain-language summaries of what they mean for Illinois LMTs.
HB5387 is a major IDFPR omnibus licensing bill that includes the Massage Therapy Practice Act. For massage therapy, the most important provision is that it would extend the Act's sunset/repeal date from January 1, 2027, to January 1, 2032. This would keep Illinois massage licensure in place for another five years.
The bill also makes changes to licensure requirements, grounds for discipline, and certain enforcement-related language. IMTPA will be closely monitoring the bill and any amendments.
HB1417 is a broad IDFPR licensing fee bill that would cap certain professional license fees, including massage therapy license and renewal fees. For massage therapists, it would cap the original license fee at $100 and renewal fees at no more than $50 per year.
It does not change scope of practice, education requirements, continuing education, or enforcement — but it could improve the affordability of licensure for Illinois massage therapists.
HB1795 is a broad IDFPR professional licensing bill related to criminal history checks, disqualifying offenses, and automatic license revocation. It includes the Massage Therapy Practice Act along with many other licensed professions.
It does not change massage scope of practice, but it could affect licensure discipline, public safety enforcement, and how criminal convictions are handled for licensed massage therapists.
